Ghazal Abbasi

Photography, video and poetry on identity, memory and belonging.

Ghazal Abbasi is an Iranian interdisciplinary artist, photographer and poet based in Shiraz, Iran. Her practice moves between conceptual photography, artistic documentary, video art and poetry. It explores identity, belonging, memory, alienation and the relationship between the individual and their cultural and social environment.

Drawing on personal experience, cultural memory and contemporary visual language, Abbasi often examines the tension between tradition and modernity. She combines photographic experimentation with symbolic and narrative approaches, creating works that invite viewers to engage with psychological, social and cultural questions.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in group exhibitions and on art platforms in more than 12 countries, across Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. It has also appeared in international exhibitions, publications and digital art initiatives, including NFT.NYC 2026 in Times Square, Cambridge Artworks, and exhibitions and publications in Poland, France, Australia and elsewhere.

Abbasi holds a BA in Photography. Her ongoing work focuses on the complexities of contemporary human identity and the continuous negotiation between memory, place, culture and change.

Practice Themes

Identity and Belonging

Abbasi's practice examines how cultural roots shape, fracture or transform contemporary identity. She often explores the tension between tradition and modernity through conceptual photography, artistic documentary and video art.

Memory, Place and Culture

Drawing on personal experience and cultural memory, her work treats memory, place and change as a continuous negotiation. It combines photographic experimentation with symbolic and narrative approaches that invite psychological, social and cultural questions.

Silence, Solitude and Renewal

Works such as Symphony Of Solitude use stillness and emptiness as a canvas, centred on a red half-sun set against a silent landscape. The accompanying text draws on her poetry and asks the viewer to find in the quiet a way for the world to "breathe again".

She asks how cultural roots shape, fracture or transform contemporary identity.

In a world where the sound of life has disappeared in the embrace of silence,

where every wave has forgotten how to speak and the wind no longer carries stories,

where the horizon itself seems to hold its breath in endless stillness,

turn your heartbeat into the sweet song of nature.

Let the quiet become sacred.

Let the emptiness become a canvas.

In the red circle of the sunset,

that bold and unfinished half-sun hanging like a portal between what was and what still could be,

where the shadows remain and the flowers are alone,

where the earth itself has fallen into a profound and tender hush,

let the love within you dance with the rhythm of the earth like the delicate beating of your heart.

Feel it rising gently from the sand,

travelling through the silent water,

echoing inside the red circle,

until silence itself begins to sing back to you and the whole world remembers how to breathe again.
