This severed flower is the synecdoche of the decaying nature of the world. A pure, core example of memento mori, an impulse I think has long roots in vanitas painting. Its decay never waited for time or neglect to arrive; it began the instant it was cut from the source that sustained it. Sealed inside a four-sided box, its own small and forced world, this flower doesn't represent nature in general. It is nature's decay in miniature; the whole condition of the world's slow undoing, carried entirely by one severed part.
